Published materials used for CDA assessments
The Council publishes the following materials essential to the CDA assessment and credentialing system:
- Application Packets - used by Candidates for the initial credential
- CDA Competency Standards Books - used by trainers assisting Candidates or individuals wanting to learn about the system
- Renewal Packets - used by CDAs preparing to renew their Credential

Application Packets
The CDA Application Packet contains ALL the documents Candidates will need to apply for assessment, as well as materials used by the Advisor.
- Preschool packet - for Candidates working in a center-based setting with children 3-5 years old.
- Infant/Toddler packet - for Candidates working with children from birth to 36 months of age.
- Family Child Care packet - for Candidates working with one or all age groups in a family child care home.
- Home Visitor packet - for Candidates working with the parents of young children.
Each packet is customized for the selected child care setting and contains two copies of the CDA Competency Standards Book; observation instructions and instrument; parent questionnaires; the application form; and scholarship information.
CDA Competency Standards Books
Trainers and others who may not need the entire application packet can purchase the Competency Standards books by age or specialty setting. These books provide a description of the Competency Standards, 13 CDA Functional Areas, CDA Assessment process, and requirements for Candidates, Advisors, Parents, and Council Representatives.
Renewal Application Packet
The Renewal Packet contains all of the materials a CDA needs to apply for renewal of their Credential. A CDA Credential is valid for three years from the date of award, after which it may be renewed for five-year periods. The Packet is applicable for all types of Credentials.
