Each state has the power to establish qualifications for staff that work in licensed child care centers. State laws describe types of staff (Directors, Teachers, Aides) and establish guidelines regarding age, education, experience, and ongoing training.
The Child Development Associate (CDA) Credential is included in the child care licensing regulations of 49 states and the District of Columbia. The Table below delineates which position (teacher or director) a CDA may attain with a valid Credential in each state. Some states require a CDA to obtain additional education and/or training, while in other states a Credential is the sole requirement. The state which does not include CDA in its child care licensing regulations is Idaho.
