CDA® Golden Moments

January 22, 2025

This year CounciLINK marks the 50th anniversary of the CDA with a new monthly feature. Each edition will put the spotlight on the rich history of the credential with stories about key milestones or members of our CDA community who have made special contributions to the early learning field.

This month, we encourage you to learn more about Edward Zigler, the “father of the CDA.” Zigler came up with the idea for our competency-based credential and was there at the award of the first 12 CDAs in 1975. In the years that ensured, the baby that Zigler conceived grew up and gained its own home at the Council, as you will see. We have now awarded over a million CDAs and we’ve urged them all to respond to Zigler’s plea: “Be totally committed to the optimal development of each child.”
