CDA® Credentialing Decision Process Enhancement Statement

December 2, 2025

Strengthening Integrity, Objectivity, and Efficiency in the CDA® Credentialing Process

At the Council for Professional Recognition, we remain steadfast in our commitment to the integrity, objectivity and quality of the Child Development Associate® (CDA) Credential™, the national standard for professional competence in early childhood education.

Each CDA candidate demonstrates competence through multiple, rigorous components: the CDA® exam, professional portfolio, and verification visit. Together, these parts of the CDA process provide a balanced and evidence-based view of a candidate’s knowledge and skills in serving young learners.

There’s growing demand for high-quality early learning and care in today’s changing early childhood landscape, and the Council is also changing to answer the call for skilled educators like those who hold a CDA. As part of our work to modernize and move ahead, we’re enhancing the CDA credentialing decision process, so we can be more efficient in recognizing competence in early childhood education.

Candidates who achieve a qualifying level of competence on the CDA® exam, when considered alongside the full set of CDA requirements, including training, work experience, and the professional portfolio, may now be eligible for an expedited award decision, which does not require a verification visit.

What remains the same:

  • The CDA standards and competencies have not changed. Every candidate must still meet the same nationally recognized standards to earn the credential.
  • The verification visit remains an integral part of the CDA since it provides many candidates with chances for reflection, dialogue, and feedback.
  • The Council will continue to evaluate all candidates using proven measures of competence, so its decision-making process remains consistent, evidence-based, and objective.

What’s new:

  • The Council can make an award decision without a verification visit for candidates who clearly demonstrate competence through their performance on the CDA® exam.
  • Candidates will now upload their CDA® Professional Portfolio digitally at the time of application via scanned documents or photos, ending the need for paper portfolios.
  • This enhancement strengthens efficiency, equity, and timeliness while maintaining the rigor, integrity, and credibility that have defined the CDA for 50 years.

The Council continues to build on the tradition of improvement and innovation for which the CDA credential has always stood. This enhancement will provide more pathways for educators to show competence in the classroom and gain respect for the crucial work they do. CDA holders lay the ground for young learners to reach long-term success in school and life, our lasting goal as we continue to enhance the CDA.
