The Child Development Associate® (CDA) Credential™ in Hawaii: Past, Present and Future

The Council for Professional Recognition collaborated with Keiki O Ka `Āina Family Learning Centers (KOKA) to hold a dynamic convening in Honolulu, Hawaii, on February 27. The gathering brought together 58 early childhood educators, employers, advocates and other stakeholders who share a commitment to elevating the voices of those who provide young learners with education and care. The action-focused event put a spotlight on the past, present and future of CDA® initiatives in Hawaii, provided information/resources on the CDA, and sparked conversations on how to build quality and capacity through career pathways and workforce programs.

The Council team discussed these efforts, along with speakers from a wide range of organizations: KOKA, PATCH, Friends of the Future, University of Hawaii/ Honolulu Community College, PACT HI (Parents and Children Together) and Kama’aina Kids. Additional attendees represented early childhood education sectors throughout the Hawaiian Islands, including key child care centers/employers, Hawaii Department of Health and Human Services (DHS), Executive Office of Early Learning (EOEL) and other state champions of ECE.

These diverse organizations share the goal of supporting Hawaii’s early educators so they can do more to support the state’s youngest learners. And the CDA could provide a way ahead, as participants at the convening agreed. Their discussions explored the value of the CDA, the expansion of CDA apprenticeships, including KOKA’s key initiatives, and high school CDA programs, along with connections between the CDA and pathways to higher education. Efforts like these should speed up the momentum that has now led over 800 educators across Hawaii to hold a CDA, as the Council is excited to see.

The Council team had the chance to meet some of these CDA holders when it visited Kama’aina Kids Preschools in Ewa and Kapolei, Hawaii. Kama’aina Kids Preschools have partnered with Parents and Children Together EHS-HS to expand high-quality early learning opportunities, which include expanding the number of educators at Kama’aina Kids who hold an Infant-Toddler CDA. It was great to witness the CDA holders in action, and the Council looks forward to watching their numbers grow.
