Celebrating Families: Making Family Fun

August 1, 2025

August is National Family Fun Month, with American Family Day celebrated on August 3rd. During this time, families can spend quality time together, head to the local park or pool, take a walk, or go to a children’s museum to explore hands-on activities that make learning fun. They may try something new, like discovering a local petting zoo or a farmer’s market. A family day is about putting aside distractions, tucking away cell phones, and focusing on the ones you love. Itis a great time to treasure the remarkable moments of childhood that pass by so quickly.

Families can make a day at home special. Memorable moments start by keeping things simple. Bake cookies together or make a favorite recipe with your family pitching in. Set up a picnic in the backyard. Play games on a blanket. Make a fort with blankets, draw, paint, or dance together. Push children on swings. Read a book under a tree. Kick a ball or play hide-and-go-seek. Make this time personal for your family – doing what is meaningful and fun for them and creating your own favorite ways to spend time with the people closest to you.

Plan a child-centered adventure. Check out summer events for children, attend a story time at the library or find a children’s concert at a local park. Find a local preserve or arboretum and explore nature. Take a walk around your own block to play “I Spy” or have a scavenger hunt. Gather leaves, feathers, shells, or treasures that are unique where you live. Visit with neighbors, friends,or extended family members. As you plan, follow the ages and interests of your children. Your undivided attention is what children most want when they call, “Look at me!” or slip their hand in yours. These are the memories they treasure the most.

Check out your local community websites, social media pages, and local news publications to learn more about free community events designed for young children and families, including parades, concerts, gardening projects, art events, and more. This month also is a reminder to extend helping hands to a busy family you know. Bring a meal, offer to take a child to a community event, or drop off gently worn clothing, baby supplies, and other needed items. Share lightly used books, toys, games, and puzzles. This is a time of year when families are preparing for back-to-school events, end-of-summer evenings, and children are growing and changing. Your family has an opportunity to invest in other children in your community, making memories and affirming their sense of worth.

CDA® Competency Goal 4 requires early educators to establish positive and productive relationships with families. Teachers create positive, responsive relationships with parents and support children’s relationships with their families. They know families well, learning about and honoring families’ cultural backgrounds and contexts, and ensuring children’s experiences are relevant and engaging. Teachers respect and value families’ diverse identities and perspectives tocreate equitable and inclusive spaces for learning.

The Council for Professional Recognition celebrates families as essential partners with early childhood educators.
