Strangers in a Strange Land: Teaching Immigrant and Refugee Children

It can be tough to teach immigrant and refugee children who’ve been through trauma. Many of these children have endured heart-wrenching trials that include loss of home and personal belongings, exposure to enemy attacks, crossings of crocodile-infested rivers and separation from family members. These ordeals can continue to impair children’s health and ability to learn once they arrive in the United States. So can their struggle to adapt to a strange, new land with a new culture and rules. It’s hard to know just what these children are going through, but early educators can help by giving them a needed sense of security and support. Teachers who are sensitive to the stresses these children face have already taken a big step to make them feel safe and at home.
