Teachers Motivation for Service Came Early On From Her MotherCOSHOCTON, OH – What does it take to go for the gold in early childhood education? Good instruction and inspiration are key. It also helps if you get an early start, the way that Megan Grimm did.

“My mom took care of children in our home,” she said, “and I have had an interest in early childhood education as long as I can remember.”

Watching the warm, nurturing care her mom provided moved Grimm to volunteer in her church’s nursery, where she felt a tremendous connection with the children.

The babysitting jobs that followed were the baby steps in a 20-year career path in early childhood care. During that time, Grimm has worked in nearly every part of the child care system: child care centers, state-run preschools, elementary education and career technical education for early childhood education students.

For the past seven years, Megan has been an instructor at the Coshocton County Career Center in Southeastern, Ohio, where her curriculum closely follows the eight subject areas of the Child Development Associate (CDA®) credential.

Her students get the 120 hours of coursework and 480 hours of experience working with children that are required to earn the credential, letting them graduate from high school with a CDA. And this, Grimm said, “is quite an accomplishment for a young person working in the field.”

She’s not the only one who’s thrilled with her students’ achievements. The students repeatedly earn gold medals in competitive events sponsored by the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America.

The college- and career-ready knowledge and skills they display in these events show just how much Grimm has taught them and how much she’s passed on her lifelong desire to make a difference for children.

As a teacher of early childhood education, Grimm is clearly as good as gold.

Megan Grimm is a Professional Development Specialist (PDS) and early childhood education instructor.
