Resolving to Serve You: CDA® Process Updates for 2026

January 21, 2026

A new year brings new opportunities to reach your professional goals. Are you looking to boost your competence and confidence as an early educator in 2026? Consider making an addition to your New Year’s resolutions: earn or renew your Child Development Associate® (CDA). They’re both ways to build your career that are now more convenient and worth your time than ever before. The Council has streamlined the CDA® credentialing process, enhanced the CDA decision-making process and even given you a new way to expand your career options in the early learning field.

  • The Birth to Five CDA® Credential: We know that many educators would like to broaden their scope by serving more than one age group of young children. So, we’ve launched our center-based Birth to Five CDA® Credential, along with CDA® Competency Standards books in both English and Spanish. The new credential gives educators the flexibility they want, along with the competence-based foundation that’s always been a hallmark of the CDA. The new setting is recognition of the tremendous amount of work that program directors and administrators do to meet different staffing-level requirements in their classrooms. It’s also a step ahead in giving our educators the option to move into a different setting if their interests change. Plus, it shows that the Council is willing to change, too, as we work to transform the early learning field.
  • Credentialing Decision Process Enhancement: There’s a growing demand for high-quality early learning and care in today’s early childhood settings, and the Council has answered the call for skilled educators like those who hold a CDA. As we modernize and move ahead, we’ve enhanced the CDA credentialing decision process, so we can be more efficient in recognizing competence in early childhood education. In our improved exam sequence, launching February 2, 2026, candidates will take the CDA® exam before scheduling the verification visit. Candidates who achieve a qualifying level of competence on the exam, along with meeting the full set of CDA requirements—training, work experience and the professional portfolio—may now be eligible for a streamlined credentialing decision, which does not require a verification visit. This enhancement strengthens efficiency, equity and timeliness while maintaining the rigor, integrity and credibility that have defined the CDA for more than 50 years.
  • New E-Portfolio Tool: Our E-Portfolio tool, also available next month, guides you through the requirements for each section of the CDA® Professional Portfolio, assisting you in creating an electronic portfolio for upload with your application in YourCouncil. The E-Portfolio tool supports portfolio creation across all Council settings (with Birth to Five available soon) and offers the option for bilingual specialization. Use of the E-Portfolio tool is optional.
  • CDA® Paper Application Process Ending: The Council is going paperless like many of the most progressive companies today. Applying for your CDA and renewing it online at YourCouncil saves both natural resources and time. It also provides access to current information regarding your credential and allows you to use our voucher payment option through YourCouncil. Even better, having an online account on YourCouncil lets you retrieve our new digital credential, powered by Credly, a leader in workforce software. The digital credential makes it easier than ever to display your CDA and share it with potential employers to highlight your expertise in early learning.
  • CDA Renewal Process Updates: The Council has updated the renewal process to make it more efficient, accessible and user-friendly. The changes include automatic renewal of the CDA upon submission of a complete application and payment, along with random audits of renewal applicants to ensure compliance and quality control. In addition, the Council has ended the CPR and first aid requirements, which are typically part of state licensing laws to ensure educators meet health and safety standards in early childhood settings.

Ensuring children’s well-being has remained one of the Council’s top concerns as we’ve worked to widen the pipeline of CDAs by revamping the credentialing process. The Council is still building on the tradition of improvement and innovation for which the CDA credential has always stood. These updates will provide more pathways for educators to show competence in the classroom and gain respect for their crucial role in helping young learners reach success in school and life. Our children’s future depends on knocking down the roadblocks that may prevent educators from earning or renewing a CDA. If that’s one of your goals for 2026, learn more about how the new CDA process updates will smooth your way ahead. They reflect the Council’s ongoing resolution to serve our early educators even better this year.
