Prepared and Competent: Celebrating the Child Development Associate® (CDA) Credential™ During National Preparedness Month

August 29, 2025

Each September, National Preparedness Month reminds us of a vital truth: the ability to respond effectively in times of crisis is developed long before an emergency strikes. While we often think of preparedness in terms of evacuation routes, emergency supplies, or communication plans, it is equally important to recognize the critical role competent early childhood education (ECE) professionals play in ensuring the safety and well-being of our youngest learners.

In early learning environments, preparedness includes more than fire drills and first-aid kits; it includes professionals who possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) to anticipate needs, respond with confidence, and safeguard both the physical and emotional security of children. Competent ECE professionals are frontline protectors in moments that require quick thinking and calm leadership.

Why Competence Matters in Preparedness

High-quality early childhood programs are staffed by educators who understand that preparedness starts with a strong foundation in safety practices, child development, and emergency protocols. These KSAs are not learned overnight; they are developed through rigorous training, guided practice, and adherence to recognized national standards.

Competence in preparedness includes:

Safety & Risk Awareness: Identifying hazards, ensuring safe environments, and implementing preventive measures.
Emergency Response Skills: Knowing how to act in medical, environmental, and security-related incidents.
Emotional Preparedness: Providing calm reassurance and support to children and families during stressful situations.

National Standards and Credentials Validating Competency

The Child Development Associate® (CDA) Credential, is recognized nationwide, and ensures educators meet rigorous standards in safety, health, and developmental best practices. The CDA® validates that an early childhood educator not only knows how to teach but also how to protect and nurture young children in all circumstances while in their care.

Building on the foundation the CDA has established for 50 years, the emerging Child Development Professional™ (CDP) Credential will recognize educators who demonstrate mastery of the CDA® Competency Standards by integrating evidence-based strategies with the KSAs required for advanced early educator job performance, such as safety, preparedness, holistic child development, and developmentally appropriate teaching practices in programs serving children from birth to age 5.

Together, the CDA and CDP™ reinforce the message that preparedness is not an afterthought; it is an integrated part of professional excellence demanding practice on the job every day.

Preparedness as a Professional Responsibility

Parents trust early educators to not only teach, but to safeguard their children’s well-being. By committing to national credentials like the CDA and CDP™, ECE professionals demonstrate to families and communities that they take this responsibility seriously.

As we observe National Preparedness Month, let us honor the ECE professionals who prepare and manage classrooms every day, not just for teaching lessons, but for handling life’s unexpected challenges. Their commitment to safety, competence, and care ensures our youngest learners have a secure foundation for growth, no matter what challenges may come their way.
