CDA® Competency Standards Books: Transition Statement and Frequently Asked Questions

October 21, 2026

Revised editions of four of the CDA® Competency Standards books will be available in January 2027 in both English and Spanish.

If you currently have a CDA® Competency Standards book for your setting, you may continue using that book to complete your CDA® credential, including completing your CDA® Professional Portfolio and preparing for your CDA Verification Visit®. When you purchased your existing book, the Council directed you to cdacouncil.org for the most up-to-date assessment policies and procedures. The website continues to provide current requirements and processes. You do not need to purchase a revised edition to complete your CDA credential.

For candidates beginning their CDA credentialing journey, the revised edition should be used. The CDA® Competency Standards books are a required resource for the CDA process, and the revised editions provide updated and comprehensive guidance to help candidates navigate the credentialing process. They also include updated examples, as well as clear guidance on training documentation and accepted training organizations.

The revised editions are aligned with the current assessment process and provide the most up-to-date information in one place. The revised editions also include clearer guidance on preparing your portfolio, including clarified requirements for training documentation and accepted training organizations, along with minor wording and example updates throughout the books. These will not be enforced until September 2027, giving candidates and training organizations time to review the updates and plan ahead.

Not sure which edition you have or still have questions? We are happy to help! Contact the Council at cdafeedback@cdacouncil.org or call us at 1-800-424-4310.

Frequently Asked Questions

I already have a CDA® Competency Standards book. Do I need to buy the revised edition?

No. If you already have a CDA®Competency Standards book for your setting, you can continue using it to complete your credential. The revised editions will be available if you would like to purchase one, but they are not required if you currently have a book.

I am just getting started. Which edition should I buy?

You should purchase the current edition available in the Council Store. Beginning in January 2027, the revised edition will be the current edition for all settings except Home Visitor. The Home Visitor CDA® Competency Standards book has not been revised during this update cycle and remains the current, up-to-date edition.

Is the assessment process changing?

No. The assessment process and e-portfolio have been in place since February 2026 and are not changing with the release of the revised editions.

The revised books simply bring the printed guidance in line with the process already in use.

What is different in the revised editions?

The revised editions bring the CDA® Competency Standards books into alignment with the assessment process updates introduced in February 2026. This means the guidance in the books now reflects the assessment process candidates are already using.

The revised editions also include clear guidance on preparing your portfolio, including clarified requirements for training documentation and accepted training organizations, along with minor wording and example updates throughout the books. We also clarified Resource Collection documentation requirements in response to questions from candidates.

These updates do not introduce new assessment steps or change the overall process candidates follow to complete their credential journey.

When will the updated training documentation requirements apply to me?

The revised guidance will be published in January 2027 and will take effect in September 2027. Until then, the current requirements remain in place.

What counts as an accepted training organization?

The revised CDA® Competency Standards books include the updated information and criteria you can use to evaluate what training documentation is required to be uploaded and types of organizations from which training will be accepted.

I am already working on my portfolio. Does any of this impact me?

No. You can continue using your existing book to complete your portfolio and credential journey.

Will my PD Specialist expect me to have the revised edition?

No. PD Specialists assess candidates using the same standards and procedures regardless of which edition of the book they have.

Is the Home Visitor Competency Standards book being updated?

Not in this cycle of updates. The current Home Visitor edition will remain in use.

I just purchased my book. Can I exchange it for the revised edition?

No. You may use either version to complete your CDA® credential, so we will not offer exchanges for the revised editions. If you already have a CDA® Competency Standards book for your setting, you can continue using it to complete your credential.

Is the price changing?

The price of the CDA® Competency Standards books will remain the same with the release of the revised editions.

Are the books available in Spanish?

Yes. The revised CDA® Competency Standards books are also available in Spanish.
