Council Letter

Dear Colleagues,

The CDA® builds opportunity, as Council CEO Dr. Calvin Moore tells us in his new book, A Credentialing Revolution: The Power of Competency-Based Credentialing. It shows how the CDA transforms educators’ careers, like it did for Keshia Jenkins, an early childhood consultant who tells her story in the book. “I started as a floater in a center,” she recalled, “and I loved the babies so much that I wanted to perfect my craft. I received my CDA and it opened my eyes to best practices in ECE.” Keshia went on to earn a bachelor’s and master’s degree since she was convinced that “teachers must never stop learning.” And Keshia’s education helped her become a center director. Then she started her own business to help centers serve children better and became an advocate for the early childhood profession. “I’m determined,” as she explained, “to make a positive impact on a field I love by helping more educators earn a CDA.”

Like Keshia, many educators have told us how earning a CDA moved them ahead and inspired them to help other educators advance, too. For example, Kay Hamlin was a mom with a high school diploma, when the director of her son’s preschool encouraged her to become a teacher. “I earned my CDA,” Kay recalled, “and still have it on my bedroom wall alongside my PhD.” Her achievements include serving as the director of early learning at a community college, where she taught CDA classes and arranged for students to get college credits for their CDA coursework. This helps them build careers, like Fatima Hamad did after coming to New Mexico from Sudan, where she taught eighth-grade math. Her teaching degree wasn’t valid in this country, so Fatima took a new route to success. “Earning a CDA opened doors for me,” Fatima recalled as she described her work as a lead mentor for Early Childhood Networks and an education consultant for the University of New Mexico Early Childhood Services Center.

In the course of her work, Fatima has likely met Shannon Bracamonte, the center’s program operations director. “I oversee 80 consultants who serve about 650 early learning programs that participate in New Mexico’s quality rating and improvement system,” she says when we feature her this month. The consultants provide on-site support for the programs, and Shannon often works beside them. This keeps her constantly on the road, but she finds time to serve as secretary on the Council’s Governing Board, where she works to spread the word about the benefits of the CDA. “The CDA opens doors,” as Shannon says in her discussions with state leaders, “for educators to learn and grow in their profession.”

Like Shannon, Jennifer Edwards, who trains educators in New York, knows the CDA’s value. “The CDA helps early childhood teachers gain knowledge, skills and an understanding of what it takes to maintain high standards in early childhood settings,” Jennifer tells us this month. “It also makes the educators realize they are the members of a profession, and that changes their view of the work they do with children.” So do the ties that Jennifer fosters among the educators she trains. She encourages them to work on their CDA portfolios and coursework together, since “this collaboration is a way to form networks that support their professional journey.”

Dr. Moore’s own professional journey began with the CDA, as he recalls in his new blog, Your Experience Doesn’t Expire. The CDA has also launched over a million ECE professionals on rewarding careers, and many have renewed their CDA, as they’ve told us over time. We’ve heard from a family child care provider who’s kept her CDA current for 20 years despite earning a master’s degree, Dr. Moore relates. He tells us about a CDA coach who renewed her CDA to refresh her knowledge of best practices in our constantly changing field. A CDA trainer urged educators to renew their CDA so they could take advantage of opportunities in their careers. And educators should also take advantage of our upcoming CDA Renewal Amnesty program. It’s the Council’s way of opening doors for more educators to succeed.

With our renewed commitment to you,

The Council for Professional Recognition
